A HUGE fire destroyed a landmark building in Barnsley town centre on Tuesday 18th.
The fire was reported to have started at 5.20am and quickly became a raging inferno by the time the fire service arrived.
By close of business the roof had collapsed along with internal timber structures.
At the height of the blaze there were eight appliances at the scene as the fire raged upwards through the roof space and threatened neighbouring buildings.
Westway has been closed, and the petrol station at Morrisons. Several pedestrian routes around the town centre have also been closed for public safety including Market Street, New Street and Wellington Street.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
It is believed that no one was injured during the blaze.
The building known as the old Chicago nightclub had been unoccupied for some time.
The fire was a stark reminder of the importance of Fire Safety in building management.
